Hex Bar Weight Calculator
From aluminum to stainless steel, our handy calculator makes it quick and easy to calculate the weight of hex bar stock.
For technical guidance, please refer to the user guide below the calculator. We’ve also included a series of helpful reference tables below that display additional hex bar weight information, for example, on a per foot or meter basis.

How to Use the Hex Bar Weight Calculator
-
Use the ‘Hex Bar Material’ box to choose a material.
The ‘Density’ box will automatically be populated based on your material choice (unless you choose ‘Other’, with this option allowing you to use the calculator with other hex bar materials not already included).
You can update the ‘Density’ figure if needed, although this is based on industry guidance for each material.
!Note: If you choose ‘Other’ as a material, you’ll need to insert a density (on a kg/m3 basis) for the calculator to function.
- Use the ‘Number of Bars’ box to specify how many hex bar units to include in the calculation.
-
Use the ‘Hex Bar Length (L)’ and ‘Hex Bar Width (AF)’ boxes to specify the size of hex bar to include in the specification.
You can select the relevant units for each measurement using the ‘Unit’ dropdowns.
!Note: If you choose ‘inch’ as a unit, you’ll need to use either whole or decimal numbers instead of fractions. For example, 0.25 instead of 1/4.
Click the button below to view a table of common hex bar inch widths as decimals that you can use in the calculator:

How Is Hex Bar Measured?
Hex bar stock typically has two dimensions. The thickness or width of the hex bar is measured as the distance between the opposite flat faces of the bar, while the length is the measurement from one end of the bar to the other.
An example image showing the ‘cross flats’ width measurement of a hex bar is shown in the above calculator.
How to Calculate the Weight of Hex Bar
The first step is to determine the volume of the hexagonal bar, with the equation as follows:
When calculating the weight of hex bar stock, the equation consists of the following elements:
V = Volume
AFW = The ‘across flats’ width of the hex bar
L = The length of the hex bar
Let’s work through an example of a stainless steel (type 304) hex bar that has an ‘across flats’ width of 50mm and a length of 1-meter.
In this case, we’ll be dividing the square root of 3 (approximately 1.73) by 2 before multiplying this figure by the across-flats width (50mm) squared, before finally multiplying this figure by the length of the steel hex bar (1m).
Because we’re using a density of 7930 kg/m3 for the calculation, we’ll need to convert the dimensions in this example to meters. The length of the bar is already 1-meter, so we don’t need to change this, but the 50mm width should be 0.05 (the width dimension converted to meters).
Here’s how the calculation works:
Volume = (((1.73÷2)×(0.05×0.05)×1))
Volume = 0.002165m3
Stainless Steel Type 304 Density = 7930 kg/m3
If we multiply the 0.0021653 volume figure by the 7930 kg/m3 density figure, we end up with a weight of 17.17 kg or 37.85 lbs.
Alternatively, use our hex bar weight calculator above to work out the weight of hexagonal bar stock quickly and easily.
